The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a remarkable document, as it summarizes the 30 most basic rights to which every member of the human family is entitled.

And we have a better opportunity now to see that human rights are implemented universally than any time in history. With the technology that exists today, and the speed of communication available, it is within our grasp to accomplish this.

In March 1969, in the face of a riot-torn American landscape, with unrest on college campuses, anti-war protests and civil disturbance in the inner cities threatening to engulf the country, L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion, pointed out that a failure to guarantee human rights was the central issue underlying all of these problems.

In an essay called Patriotism, he stated, “The United Nations came up with the answer. An absence of human rights stained the hands of governments and threatened their rules. Very few governments have implemented any part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These governments have not grasped that their very survival depends utterly upon adopting such reforms and thus giving their peoples a cause, a civilization worth supporting, worth their patriotism.

“It is vital that all thinking men urge upon their governments (for the governments’ own sake if no other) sweeping reforms in the field of human rights.”

With concern about the many human rights violations they see at home and abroad, many Scientologists are active in working to see to the full implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) is in the forefront of the movement of bring about human rights education. With the help of the Church of Scientology International and grants from the International Association of Scientologists YHRI has produced booklets, public service announcements, teaching manuals and a human rights music video that bring the whole subject to life.
